Introduction to Digital Skills – EDSQ Entry Level


This course is a suitable progression from an entry level course or for anyone with a basic working knowledge of Word and the Internet. You should also have a minimum of Entry Level 3 English skills.

Please note that this course uses Windows 10 and Office 2019.

The purpose of this qualification is to provide understanding of and competency in the essential digital skills needed for life. It will enable learners to:

  • Apply digital skills to get online and create a range of basic documents
  • Understand how to maintain online safety and security when using data and devices
  • Find and use information

The topics covered:

Being safe and responsible online and on digital devices

  • Digital threats and implications
  • Digital security
  • Storing personal information and data
  • Reporting concerns with online content
  • Digital wellbeing


Using digital devices and handling information

  • Locate and install an application
  • Apply system settings
  • Use the internet to find information
  • Identify and solve common technical problems


Create and edit documents

  • Create different documents containing text, numbers and images
  • Create digital media – capture and save images, sound and video


Digital Communication

  • Learn about email, social media, blogs/vlogs
  • Use email to send and receive messages
  • Learn about digital footprints

Transacting Digitally

  • Learn about buying online securely
  • Learn how to fill in online forms
  • Learn about different payment online methods (card payments, digital wallets, mobile payments)

It is crucial you attend as many of the sessions as you can, we recommend not going below 97% attendance.

NCFE EDSQ Essential Digital Skills can help you develop the practical ICT skills you need to use technology in life and work. You’ll develop your ICT skills and learn how to use them in real-life home and work situations.

These are an important pre-requisite of skills learners need to have prior to starting EDSQ:

  • Turning on a device(including entering and updating any account information safely, such as a password)
  • Using the available controlson a device (such as a mouse and keyboard for a computer, or touchscreen on a smartphone or tablet)
  • Making use of accessibility tools(including assistive technology) to make devices easier to use (such as changing display settings to make content easier to read)
  • Interacting with the home screenon a device
  • Connecting to the internet(including Wi-Fi) safely and securely, and opening a browser

Opening and accessing an application on a device

Awarding Body: OCR
OCR assignments are used to assess you for the IT qualification and are completed during your normal class time. An assessment will take place upon completion of each unit. You will be allowed to refer to your notes and help sheets throughout the assessment.
